The strongest memories I have are of a walk around the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. I lived only 4 blocks away. I felt like an artist and enjoyed exploring all the settings and details of my new camera. I took four rolls of film in that afternoon. When I picked the film up a few days later, I was devastated that they were all out of focus. I couldn’t understand what had happened.
I thought I understood how to adjust the aperture, counter-act the light speed and manually focus. It was only a few days later that my parents and I discovered I really needed glasses. The next week, glasses on, when I shot a roll of film, all the pictures were in focus.
Over the years I’ve played with the camera, taking it with me for college overseas programs, camping trips, family reunions and friend’s weddings. Then, I put it down a few years ago and made the transition to a digital point-and-shoot pocket sized camera.
I quickly became addicted to the immediate gratification of seeing the pictures I took. It became easy to carry the camera to the museum and the playground to take photos of our kids and I never really looked back, until now.
